The Dual Effects of Social Media on Youth Well-Being

Social media’s influence on young people is multifaceted, bringing both positive and negative impacts. On the positive side, it helps youth develop a sense of belonging, provides motivation through peer networks, and offers platforms for self-expression and creative pursuits. It also enables young individuals to voice their opinions, engage in activism, and showcase their talents, which can boost confidence and inspire social change.

Conversely, overuse or misuse of social media can lead to serious mental health problems such as depression, body dissatisfaction, and low self-esteem. It can also cause physical health issues like sleep disturbances and reduce face-to-face social interactions, impairing social skills development. Cyberbullying and exposure to harmful content are additional risks that can have damaging effects on youth. Therefore, promoting responsible online behaviour and creating supportive environments are crucial for safeguarding young users.
